Entered the war as a Private in the 43rd
Regiment North Carolina Infantry, Company
E in September, 1863. He had been attending
UNC at the time. Received a quick promotion
to SGT MAJOR. Promoted to Adjutant soon
after on account of gallantry at Bethesda
Church. He was detailed by Gen Grimes to
take charge of the Sharpshooters from his
Regiment and was promotedto Lieut. soon
after. While serving in this capacity
he was shot through the body at a skirmish
near Charlestown, WV on August 22, 1864,
which compelled him to remain at his home
for 60 days. After recovery he was
assigned Command of Company E., Forty-
Third NC Regiment by Colonel Winston who
sent in an application for his promotion
to 1st Lieut. on account of gallantry.
This bore the warm endorsement of General
Grimes and was approved by General Early.
After 3 weeks in command of Company E,
he was appointed Adjutant of the Regiment,
the rank which he held to the close of
hostilities. (Captain)
Among the battles and shirmishes in
which he was engaged were the following:
Plymouth, Drewry's Bluff, Bethesda Church,
Gaines's Mill, Cold Harbor, Harpers's
Ferry, Monocacy,Snicker's Ford, Kernstown,
Winchester, Hare's Hill, Petersburg,
Sailor's Creek, Farmville, and
Appomattox Court House.
After the war he was actively involved
in business and various activities at
First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington.
