Dr.Gaines was a distinguished, well respected citizen, physician, friend, husband, and father. He was known for his ardent support of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was husband to Jane Elizabeth Spindle and father to Sallie Garlick Gaines and Frances William Gaines Tinsley.

Note: Dr. Gaines was the owner of the mill which lent its name ot the June 27, 1862 Civil War battle of Gaines Mill.
