Peleg G. Thomas was the son of one of the founding families of Stephentown. He was the son of Capt. Peleg G. Thomas Sr. of Exeter, RI. He was born on January 25, 1738.
Peleg was a farmer, first in North Kingston, RI, and later in Berlin, NY. He also was a community leader in both Rhode Island and New York. Peleg moved with his father to New York in about 1779 to find better farm land. Washington County Rhode Island is rocky and the ground is high in salt, so New York offered more fertile land.
On March 2, 1760 Peleg married Russella Aylesworth. Russella's name is sometimes shortened to Russell. Russella was also from a prominent Rhode Island farming family.
Peleg and Russell had twelve children, five girls and seven boys:
Naomi Amy (1760), Rowland (1761-1790), Archibald (1767-1830), Esther (1769-1860), Silas (1769-1863), Peleg (1772-1847), Abiel (1773-1851), Mehitable (1775), Russell (1775 a girl), Jeffrey (1780), Deborah (1783-1865), and Rodman (1785-1870).
The Thomas family cemetery is located in Berlin, on the former site of Peleg Jr.'s farm.
