Michael Bailey, 83, 9750 Hartslog Road, Huntingdon, died Thursday afternoon at Huntingdon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Huntingdon, where he had resided for the past two years.

He was born at his family home in Alexandria, son of the late Joseph Gregory and Annie Jestina (Brulia) Bailey. He married Joy Joanne Ardrey on Sept. 23, 1950, in Huntingdon. She preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 2011.

Surviving are four children: Michael Bailey and wife, Cora, of Alexandria, Teresa Columbus and husband, Joseph, of Shermans Dale, Vicky Treece and husband, Joseph, of Alexandria and Anthony Bailey of Huntingdon; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph M. Bailey of Bellefonte; and a sister, Helen Henderson of Spruce Creek.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John H. "Swede" Bailey, and a young sister.

Mr. Bailey retired in 1967 after serving for nearly 14 years as a staff sergeant in the United States Army. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, earning the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal Second Award, Sharpshooter Badge Pistol 45, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Overseas Service Bar and the Korean Service Medal. He served in various areas with the 2nd Army in Korea and in Germany, Vietnam and the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Although not continuous, his service spanned from Dec. 3, 1945, to Nov. 26, 1967. After his military career, Michael went to work as an ironworker with the Iron Workers of Western Pennsylvania Local, Pittsburgh.

He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 520, Alexandria and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1754, Huntingdon.

Except for his military service years, Michael was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County. He enjoyed reading and politics in his spare time.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at Cutright Funeral Homes, Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria.

A graveside service will take place after the noon visitation Wednesday at Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria.
