Joseph Mahlon Rupp was the son of Samuel Rupp and Mary Durst. He had at least one sister, Sarah Ann Rupp McFarland. (Find A Grave Memorial# 92321767)

Joseph M. Rupp served in the Civil War as a volunteer in the 49th Pennsylvania Infantry, Old Company I, Juniata Co., PA. His service record indicates he was a musician. Old Company I was organized at Perrysville (now Port Royal). They were mustered into service 9 Sep 1861, at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa. On 11 Nov 1863, all went into Company A, except the supernumeraries who went to PA to recruit. Upon their return they were formed into two companies in Dec 1863.

RUPP, J.M., Musician, Enlisted as a private on 3 Sep 1861, age 18, in Company I, 49th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania. Transferred to Company A on 11 Nov 1863. Mustered out at expiration of term 24 Oct 1864. Resided Perrysville, Juniata Co. Sources: History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865, PA Roster (published in 1870).

Joseph Mahlon Rupp applied for and received a pension as a Civil War Veteran in 1877 from the state of Utah. His widow Cornelia A. Rupp applied for and received a widow's pension in 1922 from the state of Idaho.

According to the Pennslyvania Veterans Burial Cards Archive Collection, J. M. Rupp, veteran of the US Civil War, is buried in Evangelical Cemetery, Locust Run, Pennsylvania.

Joseph M. Roop of Utah, the drummer boy of old Company "I", 49 Pa. Vol., is visiting his sister, Mrs. Cyrus McFarland, near Van Dyke station, and looking up old acquaintances, although few of the older people are here now that he knew when he left Juniata County in 1875 and resided several years in Salt Lake City.

Deseret News Obituaries

PA Obit: After a few days illness at the home of his nephew, William A. McFarland, of Van Dyke, Joseph M. Rupp, a veteran of the Civil War, passed away June 6th, age 83 years, 10 months and 7 days. Mr. Rupp was a native of Walker Township, but resided in the West until thirteen years ago, when he returned to Juniata County. His wife, four sons, and one daughter survive him and reside in the West.
