Albert J. Torres, age 86, passed away on October 17, 2013 in Independence, Missouri. He was born to Jose Torrez and Guadalupe M. Alvarado in Winifred, Kan. He married Barbara D. Spader Shoaf from Grantsville, Utah, on October 20, 1975 in Miami, Okla.
Albert grew up on a farm in Minnesota. He joined the army at a young age and became a paratrooper. He fought in many important battles of World War II including the invasion at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He rose to the rank of Master Sergeant.
Following the war, Albert played semi-professional baseball. One of his fans became his future wife.
Albert trained to be a master welder. His professional life was spent helping to erect many buildings in the Kansas City area. After he retired he taught welding at a vocational college.
Albert joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1963. He and his wife worked as missionaries in the Church visitor's center in Independence for years. When the Saint Louis Temple was built, he traveled across the state to work as a temple worker until a temple was built in Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his step-daughter Karen Prewitt; his parents; his sisters Reflujio or Doris Bravo, Cristina (Blass) Pimentel, Petra or Patricia Green, Antonia or Tony Morales, and Anita Torrez; and his brothers Joseph (Maria), Felisiano and Sotero.
Albert will be buried in Grantsville, Utah, with his wife and step-daughter. There will be a graveside service at the Grantsville Cemetery on Oct. 26 at 2 pm.
