Ella Shurley was born Ella Matthews, to Christina and English immigrant William Matthews, in Illinois. She married widowed printer Henry Hart Edward (Harry) Shurley, son of Iowa newspaperman Robert V. Shurley, also an English immigrant, and Martha Hart, sister of Isaac L. Hart, founder of the Pipestone County Star newspaper in Pipestone, MN.

Harry and Ella may have met in Chicago or environs, to which he had returned after the death of his first wife, Mary Ann Loughran. Harry and Ella moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, around 1899. Harry Shurley died in Minneapolis in 1925, but according to his death certificate, he is buried not with his wife, but in Illinois. Harry and Ella may have had one child: Edward August Shurley (b. Dec 1891, IL).
