James Thomas Brickels, 83, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004.
He served in the Navy during World War II on the minesweeper U.S.S. Hazard, received his Bachelor of Science and master's degrees from the University of Akron, and he coached and taught in Sterling, Newark, and Hamilton, Ohio, before moving to Barberton in 1956. At that time, he taught and coached at Highland Junior High for nine years, then became counselor at Portage Junior High, and was a vocational counselor at Barberton High School for 12 years. After retiring in 1980, he enjoyed working with the children at St. Augustine School as academic counselor for 20 years, and was a member of the church choir, Slovak Chorus, and the Holy Hour program.
He was the beloved husband of Amy for 60 years. Also surviving are daughter, Judy; sons, Michael (Marsha), John (Wen dy); and grandchildren, Carolyn and Aaron.
