Officer James Agoain, DSN 0018, was commissioned as a Police Officer on 03/12/1951. Upon graduation from the academy he was assigned to the 12Th, 7Th, and 6Th Districts. He was also in specialized units such as the Canine and the Mobile Reserve Divisions. Most of his career though was spent in the Canine Division. After he retired from the police department on 12/05/1981 he was rehired as a groundskeeper for the Canine Section Training School in north Saint Louis County. When he retired from that civilian position on 12/01/1990 he had a total of 39.47 years of service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. During his career with the department he earned 2 "Department Awards Excellence" on 11/05/1956 and 01/01/1957.

James S. Agoain, a retired officer with the St. Louis Police Department, died Friday (June 4, 2004) from complications of a long illness at Garden View Care Center. He was 77 and a former resident of St. Louis.
Mr. Agoain was born in St. Louis. He worked as a licensed mechanic for a car dealership before joining the St. Louis Police Department in the early 1950s.
Mr. Agoain in the early 1960s joined the Canine Unit, where he found his new partner "Rex," a German shepherd.
"I remember coming home one day from school and seeing this dog that was as big as me," said Mr. Agoain's daughter, Judy DeLonjay of south St. Louis County.
The Agoain family learned to welcome their new four-legged members into the home, as other dogs would follow.
Mr. Agoain retired from the Police Department in the mid-1980s. He then worked for the Canine Training School until 1990.
Mr. Agoain enjoyed hunting. He was a Mason with the Florissant Lodge and also a 32nd degree Scottish Rite member.
In 1946, he married the former Cora McCafferty of Mineola, Mo. She died in 1995.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Forever Oak Hill Funeral Home, 10301 Big Bend Boulevard, Kirkwood. Funeral service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
In addition to his daughter, among the survivors are another daughter, Patricia Talbott of Kirkwood; a son, Steven Agoain of Mitchell; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
