Killed in action at the battle of Antietam, MD

Howard Rand was born in 1839 the son of Daniel T and Julia Ann (Jewett) Rand daughter of Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Rebecca (Green) Jewett. He was enrolled at Dartmouth College at the beginning of the war. He forsook his higher education when he enlisted with the 6th NH Regiment in Co. K. Howard's abilities were realized early by his superiors and comrades alike. He was promoted Sgt. Nov. 30 1861 and was noted for bravery at 2nd Bull Run in late August, 1862, when he recovered the Regimental Colors and bore them from the field when the bearer was killed in action. Howard commanded his company from this battle forward in the absence of commissioned officers. Howard was only weeks later, killed in action himself during the Battle at Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg MD September 17th 1862.
