A Vienna man died and two others were hospitalized after suffering burns from phenol, a liquid chemical, at the Bakelite plant between Belpre and Marietta where they were employed, a plant spokesman reported last night.
The victim, who collapsed and died a short time after sufering the burns, was Robert G. Evans, 23, of 408 34th St., Vienna.
He died despite prompt and efficent attention and resurrection efforts at the scene, according to the plants report. ...
A physician said that while burns ere responsible for Evans death; the immediate cause of death may have been shock associated with the burns. The physician said Evans suffered burns of the face and legs.
Plant Superintendent J. L. Brannon said the accident occurred around 4:15 when phenol was being transferred from a tank to a drum - a very standard procedure "which was being done in a standard way." ...
Supt. Brannon said Evans, after the accident, went immediately to an emergency shower located nearby turned the shower on but collapsed. ...
Evans was born May 19, 1931, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. (Bill) Evans, and had worked at the plant about two and a half years.
He was married to Betty Jean Farnsworth Evans and the father of a son, Robert Michael Evans. He was a member of the first Baptist Church of Vienna, the Vienna Fire Department, and the union at the plant.
Survivors in addition to his parents, wife and son include a brother, Paul Evans, presently home on leave from the U. S. Air Force; a sister, Louise Evans at home; and grandmother Mrs. Harriett Evans, of Athens, O.
The body was taken first to a funeral home in Marietta and later to the Vaughn funeral home here. Arrangements for services and burial were incomplete last night.
