William J. Anderson
The Rev. William J. Anderson, 80, of Parkersburg died Sunday Oct. 15, 2006, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Henry Clay and Esther Mae Rader Anderson.
The Rev. Anderson retired in 1983 from West Virginia Vocational Rehabilitation, and then retired in 1992 from the West Virginia United Methodist Conference. He served six years as associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Parkersburg. He spent his whole life serving the Lord in all capacities of the church. He received his BS degree in economics and business administration from Marietta College and his masters in educational counseling from Ohio University. He completed the five summer Conference Course of studies at Duke Divinity School. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran having served in World War II. Following his military service he did promotional work for Monongahela Power Company. He worked nine years for the Equitable Life Assurance Society and from 1963 to 1983 worked with the West Virginia Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, counseling the physically and psychologically disabled.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Brown Anderson; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and David Bookman of Romney, W.Va., Alice and Kase Wilson, Lynn and Jake Gordon, and Brenda and Dan Slavin, all of Parkersburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Deborah Anderson of Bridgeport, W.Va., a sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Earl Clegg of Parkersburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carroll and Penny Anderson of Richfield, Ohio, and Theodore and Patsy Anderson of Darlington, N.C.; and two sisters-in-law, Melvina and Fern Anderson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Rob Wilson of Seattle, Wash., Jennifer Kirk of Parkersburg, Eric Anderson of Belpre, Dawn Thomas of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., Cindy Anderson of Fairmont, W.Va., Amber Baker of Oklahoma City, Okla., Michelle Langdon of Parkersburg and Carrie Hoover of Parkersburg; five step grandchildren, John Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., Greg Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., and Nathan, Jordon and Kristen Slavin, all of Parkersburg; eight great-grandchildren, Roland and Tyler Sheppard, both of Parkersburg, Sidney Wilson of Seattle, Wash., Rachel, Ryan and Andrew Kirk, all of Parkersburg, Amelia Anderson of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., and Kelsey Langdon of Parkersburg; and two step great-grandchildren, Carson Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., and Cameron Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Anderson, and two brothers, Charles and Davis Anderson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Reverends Timothy Allen and Don Underwood officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
