Baker, Donald Glenn DOB 2/16/1930 ~DOD 1/26/2004 PA
BAKER -- Lt. Commander Donald Glenn Baker, US Coast Guard (Ret.), born February 16, 1930, died peacefully January 26, 2004 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. His 40-year career was spent in the military and supporting roles in Civil Service as an engineer. Don graduated from Annapolis in 1953 and accepted an Air Force Commission. He served in nuclear projects, testing, metallurgy and
research for N.A.S.A., Mercury Missions and N.O.R.A.D. in Cheyenne Mountain. He later served as Quality Control Officer for various jet manufacturers most notably the F111 A and B. Don was a quiet, proud patriot who loved serving his country. Don helped establish and organize the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in Albuquerque. He was instrumental in completion of the Veterans Memorial in
Albuquerque. Knowing the importance of education, he mentored a number of members of his Coast Guard Reserve unit, encouraging their efforts to further their education and become leaders. His volunteer work included St. Paul's
Methodist Church, Bear Canyon Senior Center and the Pharmacy at the V.A. Medical Center. He also served as an Advocate for the Employer Support of the Guard and
Reserve in New Mexico and nationwide. This organization helps protect the jobs of military reservists who may be called to active duty service at any time. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Corinne; sons, Jeff and Kevin and wife, Caryl. He was a loving "Papa" to three surviving grandchildren, Marissa, Bryan, and Gregory. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul, Clair, James, and Lee; and sisters, Ruth, Ruby, and Shirley. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Services will be held Thursday, January 29, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Organizations for Parkinson's Research or St. Paul's Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution Ave. NE, 87112.
