MILLERSBURG William A. Powell, 74, of Millersburg, died unexpectedly at his home in Millersburg on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Millersburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karl Stonebreaker officiating.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by Alexander Funeral Home in Millersburg.
Family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Pomerene Hospital or to the church of the donor's choice.
He was born on Feb. 16, 1931, in Washington, D.C., and was the son of Alfred Gottwals and Margaret (Appel) Powell. On July 7, 1956, he married Miriam Louise Stauffer and she survives.
He was a 1949 graduate of William McKinley Technical High School in Washington, D.C., a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan College in Delaware, Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and the George Washington University Medical School in Washington, D.C.
He served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Baltimore, Md., and Detroit, Mich., before beginning his medical practice with his father-in-law, Neven Perry Stauffer, M.D., during the 1960s in Millersburg.
He was a past master for the Spartan Lodge No. 126 F&AM in Millersburg and was very active in the Grand Lodge of Ohio.
He was a member of Millersburg United Methodist Church and a fixture in the life of the church, and did various mission projects in both North and South America.
Dr. Powell's medical career was spent caring for generations of Holmes County residents; from the delivery of newborn children through the final care for senior residents. He was one of the six founding executives of Agri-Sludge Inc.
He cared about and was active in the community on many levels of both the Village of Millersburg as well as the county and spent 25 years on the Zoning Board for the Village of Millersburg.
He was an avid traveler and a member of the Family Motor Coach Association.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Miriam, are four children and their spouses, William and Barbara Powell of Maryland, Robert and Vickie Powell of Charleston, W.Va., Perri and Eddie Coltrane of Archdale, N.C., and Laura and Tom Abraham of Millersburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Taylor Powell of Elon, N.C., Amanda Abraham of Cleveland, Ohio, Lydia Coltrane of High Point, N.C., Alexander Powell of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Bethany, Parker, Natalie and Jason Abraham, all of Millersburg, Ohio; a sister, Kathryn, and husband, the Rev. Joseph Rial of Conneaut Lake, Pa.
His parents and a niece, Karen Appel Rial, died previously.
