Ernest Bartlett Instantly Killed By Lightning
During the terrific electrical storm which passed over this section last Friday late in the afternoon, considerable damage was done along its wake. At Prescott's some distance from Chester Ernest Bartlett was struck and instantly killed by lightning.
As near as we can get the facts he was in the barn doing some work at the time the storm struck as no hole could be found in the roof of the barn or sides. While marked on the face, there were no indications that he had been struck in the head but his chest was badly burned and down both legs the course of the streak was plainly visible and it left his body through his heel, leaving a large hole. In a very short time word reached this city and his body was taken in charge by Geo. Ainley and Chas. Weagan of the John M. Ray undertaking establishment and brought to Chester where he was properly embalmed and later the body was taken by his father to Berglin, Michigan for interment. The accident occurred at 5:45 Friday evening.
Mr. Bartlett was well known and esteemed by all his friends and his untimely death was a great shock to his many relatives and friends. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

Ernest C. Bartlett, born Apr 1872 in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, was married on 27 Feb 1895 in Cambridge, Lenawee County, Michigan to Lydia B. Groger, daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth "Libbie" (White) Groger. Ernest and Lydia were the parents of twins, Sewell Larue Bartlett born 25 Dec 1895 in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan, and apparently died Jan 1967 in Florida, and twin baby girl Bartlett born/died 26 Dec 1895. Following Ernest's tragic death 25 Jun 1915 when he was struck by lightening while in Liberty County, Montana, Lydia married on 25 Nov 1918 in Brooklyn, Jackson County, Michigan, to William N. Smith.

The newspaper report of the Ernest's death by lightning indicated that his father was returning his son's remains to "Berglin" for interment. Likely this was meant to be Brooklyn, Jackson County, Michigan. However, no grave for Ernest has as yet been identified in either Jackson County or in Lenawee County, where his parents were buried. Additionally, no grave locations have as yet been identified for his wife or children.
