Son of Thomas and Judith Kirtley JR. Both died in Green Co KY. Note that Elijah's paternal grandparents were also Thomas and Judith (Callaway) Kirtley Sr.

Elijah is G-Grandson of Sir Francis Kirtley who came from Wales in 1710 and settled in Falmouth, Virginia. Sir Francis, with Francis Willis and John Lewis, patented 10,000 acres of land in what is now Shenandoah Co. in 1732 as well as 10,000 acres in Page Co and several other tracts in Orange and Culpepper counties.
Sir Francis Kirtley was a Lieutenant in the Spotsylvania Co. Militia from 1724-1730 and was a Warden in St. Marks Parish in 1731. They moved to Culpepper Co VA in 1736 where Sir Francis was Captain of Foot Soldiers in the Culpepper Co Militia and he moved his unit to Winchester against the Indians in 1756. His will was made Nov 22 1762 and proved Mar 17 1763. His widow, Margaret, made her will Feb 26 1777 which was proved Mar 20 1781
