Working as a maid at the home of Professor Edward Charles Pickering, he hired her to do clerical work at The Harvard College Observatory because his assistants were basically not doing the job he wanted. As she gained more experience in the field of astronomy, she developed a letter classification of stars according to hydrogen observed in their spectra; the electro-matic radiation and light that radiates from celestial bodies. In 1888 she discovered The Horse Head nebula on a photographic plate taken by Pickering. It was not until 1908,, however, that she, alongside Pickering received proper credit for the discovery. She catalogued 10,000 stars; 59 Nebulae, 310 variable stars and 10 Novae. She died in Boston from pneumonia.
