John Andersen was the second of five children born to Anders Andersen and wife Anna Johnsdatter Holstad. He was born on the Hove farm in Vik parish but the family later moved to the Nummedal farm where the last three children were born. This farm name is what they brought with them when they emigrated to America in 1865. Once here, the Nummedal name continued to appear in records but for the most part, the family used Anderson as a surname.

John married Eli Olsdatter Orvedal 27 Dec 1868 in Decorah, IA and they had seven children:
1. Olina "Lena" (see links)
2. Josephine Lorraine/Laurine (see links)
3. Diana (see links)
4. Ragnild/Rosa (12/22/1874). Baptismal sponsors were Ole O. Erie and Hans Hanson.
5. Peter Olai (see links)
6. Peter Olai (6/1/1879)
7. Alfred (see links)

Eli died in 1882 and John married again 20 Oct 1883 at Little Cedar to Henrietta Gullickson. Witnesses were Axel Johnson and Mrs. N. Johnson. Halver Gullickson was also married the same day.

John and Henrietta had three children:
1. Rachel Elena/Elma (10/1/1884-1964) married on 12/1/1902 to Albert Anfenson (9/27/1880-12/28/1912). Their children:
a. Earl (1/26/1905)
b. Hazel (3/17/1907 (daughter Lois Lee)
c. Myrtle (7/6/1908)
2. Helen Janette (2/8/1886)
3. Helen Ovidia (1/20/1888, Lodi Township-about 1951); confirmed at Little Cedar in 1901

Henrietta must have died between 1888 and 1891, but I can find no record of her burial at Little Cedar. - JHS

After Henrietta's death, John married for the third time in about 1891 to Sigrid Erie. They had no children. She died in 1927. John died at the home of his daughter, Josephine Engen in Minneapolis, MN.
