Alice was the daughter of Joseph G. and Minnie (Johnson) Norby. Her early years were spent in Fergus Falls but the family moved to Minneapolis and later to Milwaukee as her father changed professions. She graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis, MN in 1933 and St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 1938. Following college, Alice taught high school in White Bear Lake, MN and later was secretary to the sales manager of G. D. Searle Pharmaceutical Co. in Skokie, IL.
Alice met E. Gordon Behrents while attending St. Olaf and they were married on July 5, 1941 in Milwaukee, WI. While Gordon was serving as a physician in the war effort in Europe, she lived with her parents in Milwaukee, where she had her first child, Ann. Following World War II, she and Gordon moved to Galesburg, IL and their other three children were born there: Rolf (Buzz), Connie and Kristine (Tina).
Alice was involved in many family and community activities through the years including Girl and Boy Scouts, St. Mary's Medical Center Auxiliary Board, Cottage Hospital Guild Board, and Sons of Norway. Uppermost in her mind and heart always was her commitment to her church, Trinity Lutheran, where, in her role most recently as Literary Volunteer, she helped to keep the library vital.
Her beloved Gordon died in 1997 but Alice continued to maintain her independence until, in 2005, she suffered a stroke that required a change in her residence. She moved to Amery, WI to be near her daughter, Connie, and lived comfortably at Riverbend Assisted Living until her sudden illness and subsequent death at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She never forgot, however, her deep affection and attachment to Galesburg where she lived for almost sixty years.
Family, of course, was paramount in her life. She was much loved for all the roles she played throughout her life – daughter, wife, teacher, volunteer, ultimate gracious hostess, but especially mother, grandmother and Oldemor (great-grandmother). Alice wrote in her own notes for her obituary: "I would be satisfied to say only ‘she also served.'" Her children would change that to: "she always served". She is deeply loved and sorely missed.
