Senator, political leader. Thomas R. Bard was a Republican Senator from the California from 1900-1905. He is also known as the "Father of Port Hueneme". He moved to Ventura County in 1864 (when it was still part of Santa Barbara County) and served as a member of the board of supervisors of Santa Barbara County from 1868-1873. During that time, he was appointed as a commissioner to organize Ventura County, located south of Santa Barbara. He helped lay out plans for Port Hueneme, eventually making his home there which he named "Berylwood"; the lovely estate is still in use for meetings and special functions on board the Navy Base Ventura County. Senator Bard was a successful business man, and was one of the founders of UNOCAL. He died in March 5, 1915 and was buried at his estate Berylwood in Port Hueneme. However, the Senator and his wife Mary were moved to Ivy Lawn in 1967, where they are interred with several other members of the Bard family including: Richard Bard (1892-1969); Joanna March Bard (1890-1988); and Beryl B. Bard (1878-1957). (Graves/markers are located about 200 yards to the right of the office building as you enter the main gate).
