Mary was the daughter of a Christian Gerberding who had emigrated from Germany and established himself in business in San Francisco. She would later meet and marry a handsome transplant from Pennsylvania by the name of Thomas R. Bard who was 17 years her senior. They had 8 children, and lived for many years in Port Hueneme. The first house that Thomas Bard built for his wife was relatively modest and according to at least one history book "The History of Port Hueneme", clearly did not suit his wife Mary. Another larger home was built, and finally in 1912, "Berylwood", the lavish family estate was completed on 62 acres of land a short distance from the Pacific Ocean. Sadly, Mary's husband died in 1915. Her daughter Beryl B. Bard lived with her at Berylwood for many years. Local lore has it that Mary Bard wanders the estate and grounds. Thomas Bard and his wife were originally buried at "Berylwood" in Port Hueneme. However, in 1967, their remains were moved to Ivy Lawn and interred with other family members near the front entrance, about 200 yards to the right of the Ivy Lawn business office.
