Clifford Lawrence Branan, age 73, of Douglasville passed away Friday, July 17, 2009, following an extended illness. Mr. Branan was born Feb. 24, 1936, in Flippen, Ga., son of the late Benjamin Lawrence Branan and the late Sara Evelyn Wood Branan. He was very active in the Amvets having served as the Georgia State Commander from June 2006 until June 2007. He was a member of the Amvets Post No. 118 in Lithia Springs, Ga., and the Amvets Post No. 10 in Athens, Ga. Mr. Branan promoted the U.S. Military at as many Georgia schools as he was able. He presented medals and certificates to the graduating ROTC students. He was a Pressman in the Printing industry until his sickness. He also worked for the Georgia Dealers Auto Auction and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Branan; step-mother, Mable Branan; and half-sister, Kathy Murphy.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Peggy A. McDonald Branan of Douglasville; son, Christopher L. Branan of Conyers; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth E. and Tammy Rutledge of Douglasville and Daniel G. and Tina Rutledge of Canton; sister, Pat Austin of Stockbridge; half-brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Susan Branan of Crestwood, Ky.; six grandchildren; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service is Monday, July 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. from Hightower's Memorial Chapel in Douglasville with Minister Mike Mallory officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton at 1 p.m. with Military Honors provided by Fort McPherson Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be members of the Amvets Post No. 118 Lithia Springs, Ga.
