Lieut William Swinton Bissell
Birth: Mar. 12, 1839
Death: Sep. 6, 1881
Colleton County
South Carolina, USA

Civil War Confederate Officer. This gentleman was a native of Dallas County, Alabama who was residing in Charleston, South Carolina when the Civil War began in 1861. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant into the "Palmetto Guard(s)" - Company I of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. Fighting with his regiment on July 2, 1863 at the battle of Gettysburg, he was wounded and captured by the Federal forces. He was subsequently transferred to Fort Delaware, where in June 1864, he and 599 of his fellow Confederate officers were selected and told that they were to be exchanged. This promise of exchange was a lie. Bissell and his comrades were shipped to Charleston, South Carolina and placed into a stockade enclosure on nearby Morris Island to act as "human shields". He survived this forced cruelty and was relocated to Fort Pulaski, Georgia and Hilton Head, South Carolina where the malicious treatment by the United States government continued. This group of Confederate officers became known as the "Immortal 600".

He settled in Walterboro, SC in the years that followed the war and farmed.

His birth date is circa.
