The third son of George Adam Bain and Frances Bain, his father was also a Methodist preacher. William was licensed to preach in 1851. Travelling the circuits throughout the Civil War, he played no military role. A sense of duty ruled his actions. He was described as faithful, conscientious, and diligent, as well as clear-headed, large-hearted, and indefatigable.
