Thomas was the son of Dr. Robert Turner Allison and Martha Burnett Clinton. His early life was spent on the old Allison Plantation on Clark's Ford Creek in western York County, SC. He later moved to Johnsville, Bradley County, Ark. in 1860. He entered the CSA in 1862, joining Cleburne's Division of Hardee's Corps and took part in the battles at Franklin, TN, Ringold and Chickamauga. He was severely wounded by a fragment of shell fired from a Union gunboat along the Tennessee River. He returned to Johnsville at the end of the war but sold out in 1876 and later located to another farm at Cane Hill in 1877. He married Martha Ann Meek on Nov. 11 ,1858.
