James Thomas Adams was born in Jackson County, MO on June 30, 1839. He was the second of 5 children born to Winston Adams and Jane Temple. His mother died when he was 12 years old and his father married second about 1853 to Julia Ann Unk. They moved to Grayson County, Texas soon after they married and had two children born there.

On December 16, 1861 James enlisted as a private in Capt J. B. Davenport's Company "B", Merick's Battalion of the Texas Dismounted Cavalry. He was mustered out at Miligan, Texas on May 24, 1865.

His CSA discharge certificate describes him as five feet, ten inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and blond hair. Family oral history says that he had blazing red hair and was much a Scottsman in looks.

After the Civil War, he began farming in Yarellton, Milam County, Texas. He married Mary Ann Hannon in January 1874 and they had the following five children, including a set of boy tripplets.
