Carl entered the Navy in 1961, trained as a Aircraft Hydraulic's Maintenance Specialist, and had served six years in the Navy at the time of his death. He received the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. His aircraft was making an approach to land on the USS Constellation in the Gulf of Tonkin. The plane disappeared from radar approximately 10 miles from the Constellation. No bodies were recovered.
