Dr. Preston Merrill Packer, 85, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008 in Farmington, Utah at the home of his daughter, Lyn Hiller.







He was born August 24, 1922 in Rexburg, Idaho, the son of Clyde and Dora Merrill Packer. Merrill graduated from Madison High School, Ricks College, and University of Utah Medical School where he did his under graduate studies. He went to medical school during World War II and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1954. On June 23, 1942 he married Ruth Louise Berrett in Salt Lake City, Utah. She preceded him in death on April 9, 1999. He then married his brother's widow, Lola, in June of 2000, and spent seven years in Rexburg in the Rolling Hills Ward. Merrill was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he had served as bishop, high councilman, counselor in the stake presidency, and stake patriarch. He also served a family history mission in Salt Lake City and loved attending the temple. He was active in the Rotary Club and served on the Blackfoot school board. He was founder of the Blackfoot Medical Clinic in 1948. He helped to bring over 6500 new babies into the world during his career as a doctor. Two of his greatest joys were raising his children and watching and participating in sports.









He is survived by his wife, Lola, of Rexburg; children, Lyn (Melvin) Hiller, Berrett (Kathie) Packer, both of Farmington, UT; Rebecca (Greg) Putnam of Brigham City, UT; Ruth Ann (Mike) Rose of Idaho Falls, ID; Tom (Sandy) Packer and Reed (Deana) Packer, both of Blackfoot, ID; Scott (Andrea) Packer of Idaho Falls, ID; and Rachel Packer of St. George, UT; 45 grandchildren and 61 great grandchildren. Lola's children, Philip (Pat) Packer and Emily (David) of Rexburg, ID; Joseph (Valerie) Packer of Salt Lake City, UT; Laurie (Farrell) Newland of Farmington, UT; Ellen (Michael) Snyder of North Royalton, OH; Matthew (Julie) Packer of Enumclaw, WA; Michael (Shannon) Packer of Rexburg, ID; 40 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; and sister Dora Lee (Rex) Walz of Rexburg, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; brothers, Alden and Dean; and a sister, Claire.








A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Mon., May 5, 2008 at the Blackfoot East L.D.S. Stake Center, 1289 Mt. Putnam Dr. with Bishop Reed Packer conducting. The Family will meet with Friends on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, Idaho, and for one hour prior to the Service at the Stake Center on Monday.
Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.
