The son of Martin & Catherine Shelly Crull and the husband of Lydia Shelly Crull, whom he married January 31, 1839. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Newberry Township, York County, and later was a merchant.
Before the Civil War, he captained a militia unit in the Newberry Township area. Once war broke out, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 9, 1861, and mustered five days later in York, with Co. B, 87th Pa Inf. Elected 1st lieutenant and was well thought of as a drill instructor. Due to illness, he resigned his commission effective May 26, 1863.
