Died 9 Sep 1862 at Washington, D.C. from wounds received 29 Aug 1862 at the Second Battle Of Bull Run. Attached to Company H of the 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia. First Lieutenant.
Wounded 21 Jul 1861 at the First Battle Of Bull Run. Captured 18 Nov 1861 while on picket near Falls Church, Virginia, and then taken to Richmond as a prisoner of war. While a prisoner in Richmond, J.M. Grumman secretly kept a diary of all that occurred and compiled a list of all Union soldiers held in Richmond as prisoners of war- a record that proved to be more accurate than official reports furnished to the government at the time.
Born in Newark, New Jersey. Worked as a surveyor.
