Amos Beckwith, born about 1755, was one of three sons born to Henry Beckwith III (planter) and his wife, Anna Moubray. Henry and Anna were born in Dorchester County Maryland, and for reasons not known, left Maryland for Edgecombe County N.C. (which later was named Nash County, N.C.) Anna appears to have died young. It is not known who helped Henry raise his three young sons.

Amos, along with his two known brothers, Thomas and Bollen Beckwith, administered their father's will (Henry Beckwith died abt. 1796). Henry's will is found in Nash County, NC Wills page 97, dated Dec. 18, 1789, in which he gives Amos his plantation wherein Henry lived and all the lands in his possession. He also gave Amos one large iron kettle, he also desired that his negro man, Ned, be "divided" between the three sons. (**Henry's descendants hope that this meant that the three living sons would take care of the needs of Ned until his death.) All remainder of the estate both goods and chattels were to be equally divided between the three brothers: Amos, Thomas and Bollen.

Amos married Rhoda Willis at a young age. His will names his and Rhoda's 10 children.

The 1790 Census of Nash County, NC, indicates that all 10 children are still in the household. That census lists 5 sons, and 4 daughters, Dempsey who was born in 1790 after the census was taken was not counted, so it is safe to say he had at least 10 children. He may have had a male child named Amos.

Please note: Amos is listed as having served in the Revolutionary War. DAR online record: "Amos Beckwith Ancestor #202484 Service: North Carolina Rank PATRIOTIC SERVICE." Birth circa 1750, Edgecombe County NC. Paid for Service, Nash County, NC.

Also, the Roster of Soldiers from Edgecombe and Nash Counties in the War of 1812 which was compiled from the Muster Rolls has listed: AMOS BECKWITH, SIXTH REGT., which was taken from Nash County Regt. This Roster also lists James Beckwith 1st from Edgecomb Co., Sion Beckwith Nash County, 1st Regt., and Thomas Beckwith 4th Corp, Sixth, 3rd. All of these are believed to be Amos's (the first) sons. *If Amos is not the son of Amos, the first, then Amos himself must have also participated in the War. Further study and research are needed on this.
