On Aug. 2, 1937, Alvin was born at home in Rice County, Minn. — the youngest of three children — to Frank and Lillian Malecha.
He attended Millersberg School through eighth grade graduating as "valedictorian" of his class. He received his high school diploma in 1955 from Northfield High School.
Alvin served with honor in the United States Navy from 1955-1958.
He married Catherine Wiedl on Aug. 26, 1959, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in St. Paul. They were blessed with seven children.
Alvin was a lineman for Northern States Power, retiring in 1974. Moving their family to Pequot Lakes in 1978, the couple owned and operated Lake Region Grocery/Charlie's Bait Shop/Country Corner for 12 years.
Al enjoyed old-time music, dancing and the Minnesota Vikings but his family and grandchildren were his greatest joy.
Alvin is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Cathy; daughters, Cindy (Mike) Portner, of New Ulm, Minn., Susan (Jim) Gilbertson, of Lakeville, Minn.; Shari (Gary) Wilson, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Patti Evangelist, of Elk River, Minn., Jane (Kurt) Youngkrantz, of Rochester, Minn., Nancy Malecha, of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; son, Robert (Jodi) Malecha, of Breezy Point, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a beloved sister, Elaine (Rob) Graff, of Northfield, Minn.; and big brother, Clarence (Virginia) Malecha, of Millersberg, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Charles Wiedl; and nephews, David Graff and Andrew Malecha.
