He was born about 1823 in Prince Edward Co, VA, son of Adam Calhoun.
He was a stone mason and charter member of the Masonic Order in Leaksville, Rockingham Co, NC. 1st married in 1850 to Eliza Ann Kemp (died Feb 23, 1852). 2nd married in 1862 to Ann Elizabeth Carter and they moved to Ridgeway, Henry Co, VA, although he continued his membership in the Leaksville Lodge.
He was a Private in Co, H, 13th Regt. NC Infantry. Resided in Rockingham Co, NC when he enlisted May 10, 1861 at age 39. Mustered in as a Private and promoted to Sergeant about April 30, 1861. Reduced to ranks on June 26, 1861. Discharged Aug. 1, 1862 by reason of being over age. He was shown on the 1880 census in Leaksville.
He and his 2nd wife lived just off Hwy 87, 1/2 mile south of Ridgeway, VA. This cemetery is on what was his property at the time.
Per The Journal of Rockingham County History and Genealogy, Vol. V, No. 1, June 1980: "His first wife Eliza Ann Kemp died in 1852 and hers is the only remaining tombstone in a large cemetery in Spray that was destroyed when the YMCA was built on the site c.1909. Calhoun and his 2nd wife were also buried in the old cemetery."
Per book: "Secrets of the Leaksville Lodge #136 A.F.A.M. 1850-1892" by H.C. Pace, Jr.
It states that he and his 2nd wife are buried at his family farm in Ridgeway, now known as the Ramsey Cemetery, although he did not have a tombstone.
This book also contains a PHOTOGRAPH of Obadiah.
