Birth: Feb. 2, 1920
Death: Oct. 18, 1943

2nd Lieut. David E. Koenig (KIA)

David Koenig, 23, was the first New Bremen serviceman to be reported "Missing In Action" on October 18, 1943 near Cape Orford, New Britain in the South Pacific. He was a B-25 bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force and was returning from a bombing mission when the plane was attacked by 40-50 Jap Zeros. After an hour-long battle, the bomber was forced to land on the water 10 miles from shore. The navigator and the gunner survived and swam ashore. David was presumed to be "lost at sea". A memorial service was held at Zion's Church on April 30, 1947 and a memorial monument was placed at German Protestant Cemetery by the family. He is listed on the ABMC's "Tablets of the Missing" in the Manila American Cemetery at Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines.
