Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Deacon John William Scott, age 97, of San Antonio, TX and formerly of St. Cloud. Most Reverend John F. Kinney will preside. Entombment will take place in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud.
Visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Knights of Columbus Council 961 will pray at 6 p.m. followed by Vigil Prayers at 7 p.m. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Fr. Pierz Assembly will stand honor guard. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
John W. Scott was born in 1915 in Kansas City, MO., the son of Wilbur and Maude (Stone) Scott. He grew up in Henry County, MO., graduating from Deepwater High School and working as a printer for the Clinton Daily Democrat. In 1942 he was drafted into the Army, completed Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned in the Adjutant General's Corps. John retired from active duty in 1964 with the rank of Major. His principal duty stations were Japan, Oklahoma, and Germany, and his assignments were postal operations or personnel management.
John married Mildred M. Schmitz, formerly of Roscoe, Minnesota, on September 4, 1943 at the St. Louis Cathedral in St. Louis, MO.
In 1964 John moved to St. Cloud and for two years was a program director for the Tri-County Action Program. He enrolled in St. Cloud State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in History. In 1969 Bishop George Speltz accepted John as a candidate to become a permanent Deacon. On August 14, 1971, John was ordained as a permanent Deacon of the Diocese of St. Cloud.
Deacon John assisted on both parish ministry and Diocesan assignments. Prior to retirement from active ministry in October 1980, Deacon John served on the ministry teams of Holy Spirit Parish and St. Mary's Cathedral. Deacon John served as Faithful Friar, Fourth Degree Father Pierz General Assembly, Knights of Columbus, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 961, St. Cloud.
John is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mildred. John is survived by his three sons, Dr. Wilbur (Carol) Scott of Cascade, CO, Mark (Barbara) Scott of New Hope, MN and Kevin (Barbara) Scott of San Antonio, TX; three grandchildren, Phillip (Ann Marie) Scott of Colleyville, TX, Melanie (Mark) Erskine of Dallas, TX and Matthew (Christie) Scott of Dallas, TX; and five great grandchildren.
