The former Mildred Hansen, was born in Rosebud, S.D., on April 12, 1914, the daughter of Rev. Lloyd E. Hansen and Mable Grace (Troyer) Hansen. She was the oldest of nine children. She graduated from Chaffee High School in Ontario, Calif. She was an accomplished violinist and earned her bachelor of music degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and her master of arts degree from the University of Michigan. She was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, the national music honor society.
She came to Byron in 1938 to teach vocal music in the Byron Area Schools and taught music and a variety of other subjects, including Spanish and English for 24 years, retiring in 1976. Mildred was involved in many community activities. She served as both Girl Scout leader and Den mother. She organized a district remedial reading association and furnished musical entertainment for local organizations and served as church choir director. She excelled in needlework, was active in the Byron Art Club, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Byron and a life member of the Huldah Chapter 212 OES.
On June 16, 1940, Mildred Hansen married Harry G. Whitehead in Willis. He preceded her in death March 1, 2006. During the 1950s she helped him run Byron Hardware. Mildred and Harry enjoyed their years of RV travel and served as state officers in the Michigan Wally Byum Travel Club. Mildred enjoyed golfing and was active in starting the Byron Community Scholarship Fund. For her involvement and support of the schools, she was awarded the Byron Board of Education DASH award in 2003.
At the age of 94, Mildred Whitehead, a resident of Byron, Michigan, died at her residence.
Surviving Mildred Whitehead were: her sons, Robert and wife Nona Whitehead of Byron, Lloyd and wife Judy Whitehead of Saline and Harry Lee and wife Shelley Whitehead of Ovid; grandchildren, Heather Avera, Heath Whitehead, Hunt Whitehead, Hance Whitehead, Shantelle Whitehead, Tonya Whitehead, Tony Whitehead and Robin Smith-Barry; great-grandchildren, Brennan Crawford, Nathanial Crawford, London Whitehead, Hawkins Whitehead, Hayden Whitehead, Frankie Boeff III and Crystal Boeff; sisters, Marda Lucas and Eda Brown; brothers, Loren Hansen, Paul Hansen, Russell Hansen, Rev. Lloyd Hansen and Winton Hansen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Herbert Whitehead, and brother, Elwood Hansen.
