JOHN G. ATHERTON
Funeral services and interment for John G. Atherton were conducted in Longmont, Colo.
Atherton, 61, of 212 Mountain Road in Rock Springs died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, where he had been a patient since Feb. 2. A resident of Rock Springs for the past nine years and former longtime resident of Longmont, Colo., Atherton had been in ill health the past several years.
He was born in Longmont on Dec. 18, 1924, the son of Gordon A. and Etta L. Edwards Atherton. He attended schools in Longmont and was a graduate of the Longmont High School.
Atherton was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married the former Olive Parker in Longmont on Feb. 14, 1949.
Atherton was a security foreman for Black Butte Coal Company until his retirement Sept. 30, 1984. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and Last Man’s Club of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Olive of Rock Springs; his mother, Etta Atherton of Longmont; one son, Johnni G. Atherton of Rock Springs; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Connie) Craig, Mrs. Myron (Jackie) Cooke, Mrs. Ken (Peggy) Laster, all of Rock Springs, and Mrs. Steve (Vickie) Babcock of Longmont; two brothers, Ken and Bob Atherton, both of Longmont; one sister, Mrs. Art (Pat) Davis of Bremerton, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Atherton was preceded in death by his father; one son, James Allen Atherton, and two sisters, Margaret and Pat.
