Ernie Lee Manning Waters - GLENNVILLE - Ernie Lee Manning Waters grew up near Jesup, GA. She was born June 18, 1925, the youngest of the six children of William Hampton and Rosa Wilkerson Manning.
Farm life never left her blood; she grew something to eat and put up vegetables every summer. She enjoyed shelling peas and insisted that figs must be peeled for her fig jam. Her childhood church, Manningtown Presbyterian, was a vital foundation; she spoke lovingly of her Sunday School teachers and ministers. Every day began with devotion and Bible reading and prayer was her abiding comfort. Constantly, she attributed all the good things in her life to God. Her faith never wavered. After graduating from Jesup High School in 1944, she was offered a position in the Women's Army Corps and attended Warren A. Chandler School of Nursing in Savannah, graduating in 1948 as an R.N. In later years, she marveled at her own courage to leave home and her tenacity to complete three years of hard study. She continued to adventure, taking short term nursing jobs and traveling around the country for a year until homesickness and an impatient beau finally brought her back.
She married Von Herman Waters in 1950 and lost very few arguments in their 61 years together. Their early marriage was spent in Jesup. Job transfers moved them to Vidalia, Fernandina Beach, FL, Savannah, and finally to Glennville, GA. In each location she worked in the local hospital, wearing her treasured white cap and uniform and taking care of the sick. Retirement years were spent RV camping, and she & Von enjoyed many extended trips around the country with friends. They relocated to Atlanta in 2011 to live with children and Von died in 2012.
Lee passed away peacefully in her sleep April 7th, 2013 after a fine evening at a church social. Her body was donated to Emory University School of Medicine. A Memorial Service is being planned for the near future at Harmony United Methodist Church in Glennville, GA.
Lee had four children: Dianne & husband Paul Hiltman, Steven and wife Sheila, Allen and David, who passed in 2006. Her delights were her grandchildren Corey Von Waters, Jessica Irene Landeck Waters, John Wesley Waters, Matthew Paul Hiltman, William Manning Hiltman, and Halen Alexis Waters. Others important to her included many nieces and nephews, dear in-laws and a special like-a-grandson, Andrew King.
She adored springtime flowers and didn't mind sweeping pollen. But she is grateful to be done with sneezing.
