Son of David and Nancy ( Unk ) Aiken. Family consisted of seven sons and two daughter raised their family in an old plantation mansion, which still standing.


Attended University of South Carolina.

Teacher and planter in the Abbeville District, Prewar.

Moved to Charleston in 1856.

Militia General.

Married: Mary Gayle, December 15, 1852 Mobile, Alabama. Third daughter of Governor John Gayle, of Alabama.

LT. COLONEL 16th SC CAV BN, July 21, 1862.

COLONEL 6th SOUTH CAROLINA CAV ( formed from the 16th BN, ) November 01, 1862.

SHOT through the body at Trevilian Station.

LED, Butler's Brigade in the Carolinas Campaign.

KILLED IN ACTION ( KIA ) February 27, 1865, in a skirmish near Darlington, South Carolina.

BURIED: Sion Presbyterian Church, Winnsboro.


Col Hugh Kerr Aiken, brother to David Wyatt Aiken, Civil War Confederate Army Field Officer, US Congressman. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and Commander of the 7th South Carolina Infantry.
