BIOGRAPHY:
Augustus Colwell comes to California
Augustus was a native of New York state. He first migrated to near Eureka where he was involved in extensive lumbering in the Redwoods. He then was a miller and merchant in Mud Springs or Mud Flats(Folsom), El Dorado County.

In 1867 he pre-empted 900 acres of timberland fronting on Upson Bay, Lake Tahoe, (McKinney's). It ran from McKinney's property line at Burton Creek, 1 1/4 miles east to Sugar Pine Point. Near the site of what later became Moana Villa, he built a steam powered sawmill. He produced shingles. Colwell, with surprising foresight, left much of the shoreline timber, cutting instead along the southwest slopes of Burton Canyon, then east over the mountain toward Meeks Bay.

He operated the mill 10 years. In the summer of 1874 he was disgruntled to learn that two blundering topographers had erroneously changed he name of his lumber and shingle producer from Colwell's to "Casnells Mill." In 1875, the C and TL and F Company reached across Tahoe for additional timber stands to supply their mills. It was now more profitable for Augustus to sell his pine and cedar logs directly to Bliss and Yerington's combine or extend timber leases. Two seasons later he closed down his sawmill and gradually sold off his acreage, holding only the land adjoining.

In 1876 he ran the Davis Brothers' merchandise store in Al Tahoe..

In 1868, Augustus Colwell was registered to vote in Granite Township, Sacramento County. He was for a time resident of Folsom. In the 1990s I researched many of the early residents of Folsom and his name was often written of. In this registration year he listed his occupation as that of "Miller".
Thanks for sharing this info in your memorial. He was well thought of in Folsom.
