Herbert Northam was born on July 18, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois, and attended St. Mel's High School there. He entered the Juniorate in 1923 at Glencoe, and later the Novitiate there in 1926, where he received the habit and religious name of Brother Justinian Leo. He completed his Scholasticate studies at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, and was assigned to Cotter High School in 1930, and again in 1940, in that same city. In 1934, and again in 1936, he was assigned to De La Salle in Minneapolis. Brother Leo spent the majority of his years as a teacher at St. Mary's College, 1935-1936, 1936-1938, and 1943-1981, a total of forty-one years, twenty-five of those as registrar. Brother Leo died at age seventy-two, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for fifty-eight years.
