Donald George Varley, 69, of Clifton, passed away peacefully, March 11, 2009, at Providence Hospital in Waco. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Clifton Funeral Home. Burial will be 4 p.m. in Kyle Cemetery, Kyle, Texas. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
Donald was born at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, to Doris and George E. Varley. He attended La Vega High School and then joined the U.S. Air Force, where he played in the band. After being discharged from the Air Force, he moved to Houston, where he met and married Doylene Clanton Moore on Sept. 28, 1964. They moved to Kyle, Texas, in 1969, where he owned and operated a service station and garage until 1975, when they moved to Moody. He went to work for the Moody School System as Director of Transportation, Maintenance and Janitorial Services. His wife, Doylene, was the secretary for the superintendent until 1991. Donald worked as the maintenance supervisor at University Place Apts. until his retirement in 2004. Don was an accomplished guitarist and had a gorgeous voice. He knew a million songs.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Doylene Varley; a son, Rick Varley, of Hewitt; a daughter, Charla Dahl and husband, Kennard, of Clifton; a granddaughter, Marla and husband, Billy, of Whitney; great-granddaughter, Karla Pribble; brothers, Gene Varley and wife, Katherine and Richard Varley and wife, Marylyn; sisters, Dottie Enderly and husband, Lenny and Beverly Rash and husband, Ray; sisters-in-law, Sharon Maxwell and husband, Larry and Kay Wilson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
