Mr.George E. (Bud) Lewis departed this life on Friday August 3, 2012 to enjoy the eternal worship of Our Father in Heaven.
Bud was born September 29th, 1927 in Ozark Arkansas and was a life long resident of the Fort Smith and Greenwood area. He began his adult life in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and later was an employee and eventual owner and CEO of the Quality Excelsior Coal Mine of Greenwood. He owned the Mary Carter Paint Store in Fort Smith and Lewis Sales Company Distribution Business. In retirement he raised horses, and enjoyed riding. Bud was a life-long member of Goddard United Methodist Church. In addition to his lifetime of business activities Bud was a board member of the National Coal Association in Washington, DC., Manager of the Laddie Coal Company of Oneida, Tennesse, Thirty Second Degree Mason, Past Monarch of Amrita Grotto, Noon Exchange Club, Contact Club for Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, South Sebastian County Historical Society, and also served as the model for the Bronze Miner Statue at the Coal Miners Memorial in Greenwood.Bud was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Isaac Zedoc Lewis and Myrtle Adcock Lewis of Greenwood, three sisters, Jimmie Lee Miller of Greenwood, Elizabeth (Ruth) Maestri of Fort Smith, Hazel Kidd of Fort Smith, and a grandson, Jordan Michael Lewis.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Wilma Sue Craven Lewis. One son and one daughter, Mark E. Lewis and Lynda Susan Miller both of Fort Smith. Three grandchildren, Joseph Babitzke of Fort Smith, Isaac and Gabrielle Lewis, both of Fayetteville, and his brother in-law Gordon Kidd of Fort Smith.Always quick with a handshake, a joke and a smile. Those who knew him, loved him. Our " PaPa" will always be loved and greatly missed. His greatest joy in life were his family and friends.
Pallbearers are Larry Miller, Gary Miller, Sam Miller, Charlie Miller, Lonnie Paul Hurt, and Donald Ralph Hurt.Honorary Pallbearers are Vernon Stewart and B.G. Hendrix.
Stateroom hours will be from 1:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the funeral home where the family will visit with friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friends and family will be received at the home of Mark and Julie Lewis,1705 Fianna Way, Fort Smith.
Graveside service was held on Monday morning, August 6, 2012, at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood.
