Enrolled for duty 10 Apr 1862 at Batesville, Ark. as a Pvt. in Capt. Wm. Howard's Co 4th Reg't Mo. Inf. which became Co B, 4th Mo. Inf. At one point he was also attached to the 4th Mo Cav. He was appointed 5th Sgt. June 1862. At the battle of Franklin, Tenn he was shot through both legs and left in the hands of the enemy.
After the war he went back home to West Plains, Howell, Mo. and married Nancy Catherine Burton in 1867 in Missouri.
He and Nancy had 11 children.
