Gospel Singer. A native of Fentress, Mississippi, he was the patriarch and original lead tenor of the famed Blackwood Brothers Quartet. A former ordained minister in the Church of God during the 1920s and 1930s, Roy founded the quartet in 1934 with his son R.W., and younger brothers James, and Doyle. In a career spanning some 70 years the quartet would go onto have appearances on radio, television, perform concerts, record more than 200 albums, and win eight Grammys and 47 Dove Awards. They were also a huge fan of Elvis Presley's and would sing at his mother Glady's 1958 funeral. Some of their best known recordings include "Have You Talked To The Man Upstairs?", "He Bought My Soul At Calvary", "God Made A Way', "Amazing Grace", "His Hand In Mine", "Live Right, Die Right", "Jesus The Way-Maker", "Paradise Island", and "The Old Country Church." In 1948, Roy left the quartet (he was replaced by Bill Lyles) and spent part of his retirement working for the family's Blackwood Brothers Record Shop. He later moved with his family to Memphis where he died in 1971. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Blackwood Brothers Quartet.
