David was the son of Richardson R. and Mary Neal Rowland. He served as a Second lieutenant in the Confederate Army during the Civil War for four months, but was discharged due to ill health. Supposedly, he was found gravely ill near a fence on the way home and was carried by a neighbor to his house. Existing accounts state that he was stricken with a high fever and was coughing up blood. His health was bad for the remainder of his life until his death from pneumonia in 1888.
