George Thomas Hocker, 72 of Purcellville, died Nov 5 at Inova Loudoun Hospital.
Born in Hershey, PA, he graduated from Hershey High School. He attended Hershey Junior College for two years before graduating in 1956 from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, with a bachelor's degree in biology. Although he contemplated a calling to the ministry, he chose a career in medicine and graduated from the Temple University Medical School in 1960.
While in medical school, he received an ROTC scholarship and served on active duty in the US Navy for two years, stationed at Norfolk and Mechanicsburg, PA.
Seeking to establish a medical practice in a small town after his military service, he visited three towns with offices advertising to attract new doctors. He selected Leesburg and initially worked with Dr. Earl Virts. He established his own practice on East Market Street in 1963.
One of the few doctors in Loudoun at the time, h made frequent house calls and helped to establish the county's first woman's clinic, which later became the Loudoun County Public Health Clinic. After seeking help for alcohol dependency in the mid-1970's, he became an active counselor to friends, colleagues and patients. He served as Loudoun County Medical Examiner for many years and was a FAA Flight Surgeon/Examiner until his death. As the county coroner, he was frequently called to report to murder and accident scenes, including the 1974 crash of TWA Flight 514 on Mount Weather that resulted in 92 deaths.
Other interest included fine food, fishing and Civil War history. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a foundling member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Leesburg. He also was an active member of the Loudoun County Democratic party.
His first marriage to Anne Grady, ended in divorce. He married Anne Pearse in 1980. In addition to his wife, he survived by sons Frederick Martin Hocker of Jarfalla, Sweden, and George Gilbert Hocker of Warrenton; sisters Jean Hocker Guth of Annapolis, MD, Carolyn H Cooper of Urban, IL and Mary Alice Bird of Spruce Head, ME; brother Frank L Hocker of Fayetteville, PA and grandsons Thomas Hocker and Simon Hocker. He was predeceased by sister Rebecca Hewit in 1989.
A visitation will be held from 2-4 pm, Thursday, Nov 9 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The funeral will be held at the church at 1 p.m. Friday, with Pastor Thomas A Prinz officiating interment will be at Hummelstown Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
