Erna L. Hansen, 81, of Pierre, passed away Thursday, March, 5, 2009 in Rapid City after never fully recovering from a stroke she suffered on January 12, 2009 at her home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, March 8, at Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre. Funeral services will be held Monday March 9 at 10:00 at Lutheran Memorial Church at 320 Prospect Ave, Pierre, SD with Reverend Diane Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30PM MST at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.

Erna was born on March 22, 1927 in Pierre, SD to Emmanuel and Minnie Schlenker. She was raised in Sully County near Agar then moved with her family to Onida, SD after her father passed away in 1939. In 1946 she moved to Pierre, SD and worked at the St. Charles café. It was while working there that she met her future husband and the forever love of her life, Walter L. Hansen. They married and had two sons, "JW" (Jim) Hansen and Gary Hansen. Erna worked at Neiber's Laundromat for a short time then worked at the Red Owl store for over 25 years first in the meat department then as a cashier. Many who went through her checkout lane will remember her friendly smile and courteous manner. She was very proud that together with her family, they built their home themselves from the ground up. She was proud of her garden and yard work and kept an immaculate home for her family all while working outside the home. After retiring, she and Walt enjoyed traveling until his health no longer allowed that. After his passing, she slowly got back to traveling often taking her famous solo drives to California to visit her granddaughter and family as well as other long trips. She enjoyed her time with R.S.V.P. group of Pierre, volunteering to those who were themselves in the nursing homes and hospice in Pierre. Erna was active member in the Lutheran Memorial Church and volunteered some of her time there as well.

Erna is survived by her son "JW" (Jim) Hansen and his wife Liz, her grandson Dr. Eric Hansen, of Bettendorf, Iowa, granddaughter Selisia Hunsacker and her husband, Michael, of Ridgecrest, California, grandson Colby G. Hansen, of Windsor, Colorado, a great-granddaughter, Emily Hunsacker, a brother Raymond Schlenker of Sturgis, SD and a sister, Lee Fleming of Oral, SD. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as two sisters-in-law, Shirley Shinn of Tucson, Arizona and Marilyn Hagerty of Grand Forks, ND. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Hansen and her son Gary Hansen, her parents and a brother, Elmer E. Schlenker.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre.
