Grace R. Sullivan
Grace R. Sullivan, 104, formerly of Pennsboro, departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at Athens, Ohio, just eight days from her 105th birthday.
Mrs. Sullivan was born on Sept. 24, 1901, in Pomeroy, Ohio, and was the daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn Bay Bengel. She moved with her parents and older sister to Marietta, Ohio, in 1909. She graduated from Marietta High School in 1919 and received her A.B. degree from Marietta College in 1923 where she met and married Carl Rollynn Sullivan, who was from Dexter City, Ohio. They became residents of Pennsboro in 1925, where her husband served as a high school teacher, coach and principal of Pennsboro High School for 35 years, and where they reared their five children. Their children all followed careers in West Virginia and, in 1962, Grace was named West Virginia Mother of the Year, representing West Virginia at the New York City Conference honoring Mothers of the Year from all fifty states. Grace was an avid gardener. After her husband passed away in 1968, she continued to raise a large vegetable garden, often starting her own tomato and pepper plants from seeds. She was also an excellent cook and was most noted for her apple pies, sugar cookies and bread 'n' butter pickles. She also enjoyed reading, sketching and needlework.
Grace was a member of Pennsboro United Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She sang in the church choir until she was in her eighties and continued to love singing while residing at Kimes Convalescent Center, Athens, Ohio. During her stay, she eagerly joined the music therapy at every opportunity with her still perfectly pitched alto voice.
Grace is survived by a daughter, Betty Jo Sullivan of Athens, Ohio; sons and daughters-in-law, C. Robert and Jane Sullivan of Sistersville, Alfred B. and Lou Sullivan of Wadsworth, Ohio, and David B. and Norma Sullivan of Berlin, Ohio; grandchildren, Joe Sullivan, Kathy Hutzler, Rolly, Michael and Peter Sullivan, Dan Thomas, Lori Snoke, Brian Sullivan and Tom and Susan Sullivan; 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.R. "Pop" Sullivan; sister, Gladys L. Bengel; son, Carl R. Sullivan Jr.; and grandsons, Mark Sullivan and Bruce Sullivan.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Pennsboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven Lightner officiating. Interment will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marietta, Ohio.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home, 447 W. Myles Ave., Pennsboro, is assisting the Sullivan family with arrangements.
It is requested that memorials in the name of Grace Sullivan be made to Pennsboro United Methodist Church, 601 Main St., Pennsboro, WV 26415.
