The son of John Robertson Gilliam and Martha H. Marshall-Anderson Gilliam. He was born at Osceola. He graduated Hampden-Sydney College in 1859. In 1861 he first joined the 18th Virginia Infantry, then the 4th Virginia Cavalry and served them through the War. He rode with Stuart around McClellan and flanked Meade's wing at Gettysburg. He escaped at Appomattox and joined Johnston in North Carolina. After the surrender to Sherman, he brought back eighty-five horses and mules taken from Virginia. In 1865 he entered the University of Virginia to study law. He began the practice of law in Richmond in 1868. He first married Mary Roche Hoge, the daughter of Moses D. Hoge in 1870. Married Emma Stewart in 1906
